One day while you're setting in your room a portal opens up in your house. Looking through the portal you can see that is a portal leading into a city of Creation. You are not sure where exactly in Creation, but you just somehow know. A voice in your head tells you that you have one hour to prepare. You then have an overwhelming feeling and knowledge that going into this portal is the best thing you can possibly do.

How do you prepare? What would you bring with you?

Also in case you ask "If X works" or "Do I know X", then the answer is you don't know. Those are things you'll need to account and adjust for.

I think the biggest problem with Creation is that we don't know if it runs on the same rules of physics and science as our own, essence doesn't seem hugely compatible with RL rules of nature once you start getting too small with things. Which would end up caveating some of the things I would choose to take with me compared to if I was say travelling in time here. Gathering up modern tech that breaks as soon as I got to Creation seems a waste of an hour although I might hedge my bets with a few things.

Top of my list would probably be my medical text books since I suspect basic anatomy and medicine are still similar, and just having a functional knowledge there is going to almost certainly fast track you to the upper middle class in such a setting. I'd also want to grab a stockpile of as many painkillers and meds as I could get my hands on just for myself in the hope they continue to work.

Is saying you'd take your Exalted books cheating?

Which books, though? Like, anyone who's been through med school and purchased physical copies of their books is going to have more than they can carry. Is it, say, worth trying to bring along your Pharmacology textbook? You certainly won't need The Only EKG Book You'll Ever Need (ironically) If you already know the basics well, do you drag along all your specialist textbooks instead?

Having been through med school yeah, you're right. Anatomy and my clinical medicine books would be top of my list, there's a lot there I wouldn't use but a bunch that would be valuable as references. The anatomy books on their own would probably be the sort of thing that half of Sijan would pay dearly for

I actually had a very similar thought. If there's not a lot of good anatomy reference in Creation, then it almost seems worth bringing along all the anatomy books (and coloring books) you own.

Similarly, I wonder if Creation has much in the way of pediatrics. Medical treatise on the care of children came in like the 15th century, which means Creation probably doesn't have many specialists in that area, and Dragon Blood lineages are going to really want someone that can treat children reliably. I guess, mechanically, a DB with enough XP could specialize in Medicine (Pediatrics) with two weeks time rather than the 3-5 years a residency takes, but it seems like we have to guess that this world will work somewhat on realistic terms?

Neonatal care and basic midwifery actually seems like a prime area you could be pretty transformative in for some communities, and unlike a lot of modern medicine would likely be within reach of someone skilled even without expensive modern diagnostic equipment, lab testing and pharmaceuticals. Good suggestion, I'd be grabbing my stuff for that too

Na. Bring all your Exalted books. Sell information to Exalts on what the Ebon Dragon is planning. Get immediately put on the Yozi's hit list.

I think the better plan is bring your books, give your books to someone you know from the books will at least pay you for them instead of just knifing you and taking it and then take your cash and live a nice life? Let them deal with the fallout?

That's actually the plan! Or a variant anyway.

I'd start with setting a timer so I can properly pace myself in gathering things. Text a friend the location of my spare keys and the password to my PC so there's no lingering threads on Earth. From there, preparing is a matter of typical inventory: what do I need today/next week/next month?

Just knowing I'll end in a city is no guarantee of anything, least of all magical translation powers. I'd bring all my normal camping stuff in case I have to spend a week on the street.

Longer-term, books have great value, yeah. That assumes you can both meet a trustworthy buyer and communicate your intent. Exalted books are great reference, but I would be printing individual useful pages from PDFs to save on weight.

Since my own technical books have no use in Creation, I would personally bring a number of art objects. A guide to Art Deco, a rare comic book, painted miniatures with rulebooks and dice, etc. These things have value without being attached to my person, so I can trade them even without knowing the language. I'm also perhaps more likely to be robbed than held captive.

A longer term goal is to attract the attention of the nearest power and then sell out. Most of us should be able to pass as junior mathematicians. No supernatural intelligence but the modern education counts for something. I mean, optimally, I sell out to a group which has direct control over their Exaltations, but a well-paying mid-level job crunching numbers for the local Dynast or god or whomever isn't the worst life you could have in Creation. I'm not going to say Infernal or bust; logistics jobs would pay quite well during the Realm Civil War.
