My lord,
I can now see why you thought that this investigation would need my skills. I've organized all the collected information and my conclusions in the attached report; in brief, he seems like he could prove to be a very useful asset for our cause, should sufficient leverage be used.
-The Eye Drowning in Darkness

History and Activity
The earliest reports of the Chosen of the Moon known as Scales Glisten under Storm-tossed Waves dates back three years, to ghost stories told by drunken sailors. When we encouraged sailors to tell us the origin of these stories, the trail we discovered ultimately led to the crew of Blood-Soaked Decks, a pirate captain of some infamy known for raiding the coasts of the West for slaves. We have ignored her in the past, for she has never sailed far enough north to trouble Skullstone's waters. The last confirmed reports of her activity ended three years ago. We assumed that she had either retired with her ill-gotten gains or had met an unfortunate fate. It would seem that our latter assumption was correct; according to the survivors of her crew we have been able to track down and interrogate, three years ago Blood-Soaked Decks spent a summer raiding the coasts of Skullstone. Due to the pirates killing any witnesses and some sorcery, this went undetected by us. This spree ended when they raided a small fishing village for supplies and slaves; after attacking in the dead of night under a new moon, with all the villagers either dead or in chains, they began loading the cargo onto the ship. Progress halted when a beacon of light flashed towards the sky from inside the village; it was 'as if the moon had appeared on the ground, radiating an unearthly silver and purple light'. A group was sent to investigate the cause; this is where the majority of the survivors were. They discovered Scales, a newly exalted Lunar, in the center of a mandala made of the corpses of the dead villagers; as they arrived, the spell was finished, and the dead arose to take their revenge. With the distraction executed, Scales slipped into the dark waters and was gone. Whilst the pirates were distracted by the dead waking throughout the area, Blood-Soaked Decks was blindsided from behind, dying to an arrow in the the skull; Scales had used the distraction to free his kin and assume control of the ship. With the ship in their possession, they cast off, leaving the pirates for dead. That is all of the information that these pirates had; after the interrogation, we executed them, as is standard for high crime. Further information has been gathered from contacts within the North. The next few years feature sporadic appearances by Scales, centered around the domain of the Lunar Elder known as Smiling Rat; this, combined with an apparent shared affinity for necromancy, suggests that Scales engaged in some sort of apprenticeship with the Elder. The last report received, just a few weeks ago, suggests that Scales is now moving south, although the reason is as yet unknown.
Contact
It is my belief that we might be able to form a mutually beneficial alliance with him, although we will have to approach him carefully. While he has fought in some capacity against the shadowlands in the North and studied under Smiling Rat, he was originally a native to Skullstone, which provides some connection between us. Regardless of whether we wish to utilize him as an asset or not, I recommend the observation of his surviving kin, who revere him; they may provide some measure of leverage against him. We should also be wary of Smiling Rat, but this can also work to our advantage; Smiling Rat seems to lack the backing of the majority of the Silver Pact, which suggests that Scales might also be lacking Silver Pact support.
Appearance
I have attached a description of Scales, as well as an eyewitness description of his anima banner and his suspected Tell.
Capabilities
Also attached is a further report on his capabilities, combat and otherwise.

This concludes my report on the Chosen of the Moon known as Scales Glisten under Storm-tossed Waves.

(Should be complete, aside from the Heart's Blood shapes. For now I chose two of the three necromancy spells available and the only shaping ritual, but I'm open for any other necromancy spells/initiations to be sorcery with some bone paint. Hopefully Essence will be released soon, as I believe that will have advice on creating new spells, which might help with the necromancy. I'm open to whatever changes you suggest.)

I really like the character and think he has definite potential!  The Lamplighter very well might have his eye on a necromancer for his mysterious purposes.

The questions I had are:
  • He has two points in Silver Pact backing - but your description says that "Smiling Rat seems to lack the backing of the majority of the Silver Pact, which suggests that Scales might also be lacking Silver Pact support."  I just wanted to confirm which way it was.
  • Your description says he is in possession of the pirate ship formerly known as the Blood Soaked Decks.  I'm fine with it having been left back in Smiling Rat's domain or somewhere else where he doesn't have it on hand, but if he's going to start with it immediately available to him in Nexus, that's going to require him to have two resource dots.
  • Can you give a little more explanation of his limit trigger to me?  I can definitely implement what you have in some way, but I fear it will not involve much agency on your behalf and would feel like me just arbitrarily giving him limit outside of the natural flow of the story (e.g. "So you receive a message from White Rat that his domain suffers and he desperately needs your assistance, but you're on the other side of the world. Roll Limit").

Alright, I think I've got it done! Here's Marienbad, Casteless Lunar, mechanically more of a rogue-ish character.
Backstory
Marienbad and Nim were born in the town of Allum, near Pneuma, to humble herbalists and healers. They always had a special affinity with all manners of animals. When they were little, the sisters once surprised their mother coming back in the middle of the night, wearing fearsome-looking bloodied spikes on her wrists ; she had them promise not to tell anyone else, and go back to sleep.
The young girls figured out these details in their life, and more yet, when the Wyld Hunt arrived for their mother, Jubilant Starfall, a Lunar in hiding. They never knew whether she died that day or was captured.

From that day on, with their status as Moon-Touched children revealed and their father, Ivory Hammer, an (unbeknown) consorter of an Anathema, the rest of society started reviling and rejecting them more and more openly. Ivory Hammer quickly sank into melancholy, drugs and misanthropy. The eldest daughter, Nim, held on to her training as a healer, and tried to hide her resentment. As for Marienbad, she soon turned to crime and theft to help her family and indulge into her anger ; while Ivory Hammer sometimes denounced his youngest in rare moments of lucidity, Nim never blamed her.
Eventually, both girls came to the conclusion that if they were going to be treated as outcasts anyway, they may as well leave normal society and find someone willing to accept them as Moon-Touched, which they found in the person of Shadow-Rending Razor and her community. Marienbad trained hard as an assassin, and acquired a little bat to help transmit messages, while Nim perfected her medical knowledge and assisted other members of the cult.
One day, Marienbad heard rumors about a legion that was supposedly going to escort a caravan transporting a pair of deadly-looking moonsilver khatars. She couldn’t shake the thought they were maybe her mother’s weapons, the last relic from her she could possibly dream of getting back, even if she couldn’t use them. She disobeyed her mentor and disregarded her sister’s advice and went to rob the caravan with a few foolhardy accomplices. The expedition rapidly degenerated into a suicide mission ; Marienbad got caught and injured by traps, while her accomplices struggled to distract the guards without getting killed themselves. By the time she put her hands on the Ichneumon Blades, she could barely walk and breathe without feeling like her lungs were full of needles. Two guards found her as she was about to escape ; one seized her, the other insulted her and demanded to know what made her miserable life worth living. The mocking guard was Luna, who was satisfied by Marienbad’s answer. She managed to escape with her life, a bat flying into the night with her treasure.

Having now exalted as a Lunar and successfully completed her self-imposed mission against all odds, Shadow-Rending Razor became her shahan-ya and agreed to train her personally, though the master was reluctant to get involved with the Ichneumon Blades, much to her student’s disappointment. Still, having attracted a lot of attention with her flashy robbery, Marienbad agreed to lay low for a time; they couldn’t afford attracting the Wyld Hunt to their community.
Receiving the strange letter was a relief for the young woman, who saw it as the permission to go back into the rest of Creation, better learn how to use the artifact khatars, and maybe even find out more about her mother. Nim accompanied her little sister, in the hope, maybe, of tempering her sometimes brash disposition.

3) What makes her especially good at dodging humans, as opposing to anything else?

1. The narrative report is correct; I fixed that on the character sheet.
2. I imagine that the ship is in the hands of the other survivors, who use it as a merchant ship to help keep themselves afloat, if you pardon the pun. So while they're happy to transport Scales, they're only able to do so in the (North/South)-west.
3. I changed the limit trigger to be weakness instead of absence; I think this would allow it to be more integrated to the story.

Gonna build a Full Moon Caste Athlete.

First comes the story told. Second comes the build of bold. Third sees the realisation of old.

Po Nuang Shia grew up in the Szonia tribe, south and east of the Eastern Realm of Prasad. Son of a merchant mother and seamster father, Shia would run errands for either parent; he grew lithe and agile. Many occasions arose when deep dry river-beds needed crossing, or even when that same bed became swollen with flash-flood-waters from the rare but violent storms.

Known by many as "Swift Leopard", for his fast pace and grace, Shia soon became a messenger for his clan.

One summer evening, as the day was coming to an end and  the clan were settling into a camp behind a protective dune, Shia and three others, friends all, were out searching for resources. They had found a dead beast, too large to move, and were stripping it of hide and other items his father could turn into garments, his mother could sell, and others of the clan could utilize for meals and their own specialty crafts.

Dust plumed into the sky from afar, which on inspection looked to be Dragons, bored and hunting for game. Their tribe usually managed to avoid such as these, as their people had targets on their backs purely for who they were and what they represent and could become. A thorn in the side, to be pulled out and ground to dust under heel.

The small group of friends, watching the Dragons and trying to work out their direction of travel, were caught unaware by the outliers of the same. An uneven fight ensued. Nazaria entreated Shia to run; warn the tribe! She always spoke wisely, and he always listened to her. Making for their camp, which was some distance away, across land strewn with large boulders and stretches of dry, spikey briar and cacti, Shia came to realise that the dust cloud was headed straight for his tribe but would keep the advancing army hidden behind that same protective ridge.

Shia ran harder.

Leopard ran faster.

He jumped, dodged and ran across the terrain, and as he ran he felt infused with power, the rising moon at his back and her cold power lancing through his muscles. The world around him slowed and he saw how to use the boulders to his advantage; to gain height and a vantage point to view the enemy and his tribe; to jump from one place to the next, cutting the distance from a round-about route to a direct line as the falcon flies, saving both time and energy.

In a blur of movement Shia sped into camp, crying out warnings as he went, "To arms! Move the yound and old out - ready for battle!" All heard his voice but none saw more than a blur of passing force, until he stopped in the circle of elders. "Dragons over the crest! Minutes away!" No sooner had the warriers of the tribe readied themselves than a tide of Dragons washed over the dune and battle was joined.

Many on both sides died that day, but the Szonia tribe did no relent and die, like many would have done in their place and the Dragons fell back. Lunar had seen fit to bless Shia and he would do his best to see her gift well-used.

Time passed, the lands were traversed, and a mysterious papyrus was traded for and came into his mothers hands and thence into his. He read it, and the many that flowed his ways in the weeks that came until the moment his mind was made up. He set forth.

I love it! Looking forward to a character sheet soon!

Working on that. Basics done, looking at charms now then some re-jigging. First time making a Lunar so wrapping my head around things :/

I spent merit points/bonus on a ton of merits and now realise some of those can by put into the Hybrid Body array, freeing up those points for the initial build elsewhere.

Do we have a Discord channel for chit-chat?

I think what you wrote is legitimately wonderful.
Thank you!
Plutonium wrote: Sun May 09, 2021 1:13 am Here are my comments:

1) Basically the same thing as I said in relation to Eclipse's character - I run a risk of trivializing combat for you or overtuning it for everyone else by letting a Single Point Supernal take the entire charmset in combination with Awareness Charms that let them augment their starting initiative to completely dumpster an enemy before they can act. Your character is a little less optimized in that regard, and you're not taking Awakening Eye and the full 10 dice on the join battle, but on the other hand, you've got Thunderbolt Attack Prana in there to boost the damage on the back end.

So same question: I want to hear more about how you propose I should balance any sort of combat encounter against a full 9/9 Single Pointer Dawn, without overtuning the encounter against the rest of the party.
Hmmm, I see the problem. I could imagine a long-ranged archer beating said 9/9 SP dawn, or a group (not a battle group) of significant opponents, thinking on the mote limitations. Intentionally, the characters intimacies are set up in such a way as to make it easy to persuade him to back down.

However, at the same time, 9/9 SP dawn, as you say. I think Blinding Nova Flare is really cool so I want to keep that, but otherwise Thunderbolt Attack Prana got switched for Graceful Crane Stance. Fast Reflexes got switched for Danger Sense, the bonus point of Awareness is now an Awareness specialty in spotting hidden things, a point of wits got moved to perception for much the same purposes. All in all leaving awareness at 6, 12 if excellency, double 9s on acuity prana.

I haven't actually seen SPSItV used in a game, so I'm not all too aware on whether its super strong or if its just the awareness boosting, but I hope this tunes it down to "supernal strong" rather than "makes balance impossible". Do tell if you feel this isn't enough, though
Plutonium wrote: Sun May 09, 2021 1:13 am
2) Your character is, in my view, nearly exclusively focused on his relation to combat and violence. His defining intimacy is about the suitability of violence, the limit trigger is combat-related, and 3/4 of his specialties apply only in combat. It's just a little too combat-centric for me to be comfortable with.  Is there a way we can broaden him up a little?

The specialties were a mistake on my part, so they've been suitably changed.

The intimacies is somewhat intentional, I want his most defining intimacies to be against violence exclusively — juxtapose it a little with his supernal ability — as it should be easy to convince him to step down, and hard to coax him into a fight. I've added a few more major and minor intimacies to broaden his overall scope, though.

The limit trigger, as well, is definitely intentional. I'm not going to spend a paragraph or two explaining the details behind it, but to sum it up, his identity is founded on either him as one of the greatest martial artists, or specifically not that. Failing as a martial artist is a direct blow to his self-identity. Nevertheless, it's expanded a little so it doesn't represent a single action.

Receiving the strange letter was a relief for the young woman, who saw it as the permission to go back into the rest of Creation, better learn how to use the artifact khatars, and maybe even find out more about her mother. Nim accompanied her little sister, in the hope, maybe, of tempering her sometimes brash disposition.

https://www.lotcastingatemi.com/characters/11420

I think you have an interesting core of a concept, but I'd like to flesh it out a bit to discover ways in which we can tell a compelling story for your character within the basic premise of the campaign.

1) Can you tell me a little more about her Familiar Bat and her Sister, and her relationship with them?  What does her sister think about having not been the one chosen by Luna to follow in their mother's footsteps?  Is there any jealousy there?

2) What was her answer to Luna?  Knowing that would seem extremely important in defining her character, as seems to be central to the reason why Luna decided she was worthy of exaltation. If it's supposed to be a secret that we'll discover, that's fine too.

3) What makes her especially good at dodging humans, as opposing to anything else?

Thanks for the feedback!

1) Her sister: being the eldest and more grounded, and having had to assume the role of a parent between the moment their mother was captured and their arrival in Shadow-Rending Razor's cult, Nim is clearly the more reasonable one of the duo, taking care of the "boring" business and trying not to let Marienbad get into unreasonably dangerous situations again. That being said, there certainly is jealousy that Marienbad isn't fully aware of, and that does complicate their relationship. Now, that feeling is balanced with the philosophy they have in common: that society rejected them for their parentage and pushed their father to become a wreck, so they need to get back at it, especially the Wyld Hunt, and learn more about their mom; if Marienbad is the best equipped one to do so, so be it, since it's not like her exaltation can be undone. Besides, better have an exalted little sister than a dead little sister. Ultimately, following Marienbad is Nim's decision, and not something that was imposed on her against her will. Marienbad loves dearly her sister, shows her a lot of generosity and defends her (or would, if Nim got in a remotely similar amount of trouble as herself).
Her familiar bat: called Litchi, Marienbad found it as an orphaned pup, while out to gather guano to prepare remedies. With her natural affinity with animals (and some advice from Nim, to be perfectly honest), she managed to keep it alive and raise it to adulthood. It has proven useful already as a messenger, taking written messages tied to its leg to their intended recipients (as long as it met them before). Litchi was her first taste of responsibility before exalting, and with her soul shape being a bat (though not the same species), she now feels a special kinship with it.

2) Her reply was that it may be a terrible life, but it was worth living because it was hers. (Her spitting on Luna as she said it may have helped communicate her determination.)

3) It was part of her assassin training; due to the nature of her destined role, she would be expected to face humans (mortals or exalted) as her main target or their bodyguards to defeat, hence the need to memorize human movements and anatomy in particular.

Morning, Plutonium. I’ve got a final version of Estan‘s sheet up, should you have time and feel like giving any input. Seems like applications have really blown up in both numbers and quality, so don’t worry about it unless you see something you don’t like. https://www.lotcastingatemi.com/characters/14517

I've switched out Peacock Shadow Eyes for Flight of the Brilliant Raptor, because I feel someone in the circle should have an ranged attack, on the off chance we do need to resort to violence and whatever it is is inconsiderately out of immediate stabbing range. I was kind of going between that and Unslakeable Thirst of the Devil Maw, but settled on the bird because it wins out for engagement range. Plus, it lets learning Peacock Shadow Eyes become a story beat, which I think could be a lot of fun. In any case, I foresee no other changes to the sheet. Should be good to go from here.

I have not yet done intimacies, and I've only put the titles of charms in place. Also, havn't given weapons/armour/items.

This is my first Lunar, so I would very much appreciate honest feedback!

Character wise think Cheetarah from Thundercats. Shia is a protector; anyone he cares for are his "cubs". I had a few other charms to consider, but let's see what your thoughts are first!

I've tweaked Persistent Cub/Cynis Bellara slightly and taken advantage of the excellent google sheets sheet. Much more my style than Lot-Casting Atemi. I'm still not quite sure I'm done tweaking, but she's getting there: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

I'm going to start finalize choices for the game at the end of the day, so make sure you finalize your submissions!

I'm afraid I've found myself without free time for the next few days so I can't rework the justice intimacies by then. Feel free to skip my submission if you wish.

Alright, the time has come. I wish I can give extra time to everyone who said they needed a little more time to work on their characters, but I promised to make a decision today.

For everyone that submitted characters, I want to thank you, and I truly wish I could have taken all of you that are interested in playing.  Nearly every submission was an interesting concept that I'm sure was the result of hours of hard work, and I tried to give honest and productive feedback (either in this thread or over discord) to nearly all players that who gave me completed submissions in time for me to review.  Unfortunately, for my own sanity, I feel that the game right now should be limited to 6 players.  Partly to maintain secrecy regarding planned plot elements for the game, and partly to avoid any sort of hurt feelings, I won't be answering any questions about why certain characters were or were not chosen over others.

The chosen players are:

  • Eclipse, in the role of The Nameless Sword Maiden a/k/a the Sword Demon - Dawn Solar - A deadly Single Point stylist who lost her identity

  • Esbilon, in the role of Cynis Bellara a/k/a Persistent Cub - Eclipse Solar - An ex-dynast political strategist and White Veil stylist

  • Exewon, in the role of Protects-from-Cold - Casteless Lunar - A northern beastfolk hunter and natural weapon brawler

  • Hart, in the role of Khi aka Sadrica Ar White Hook - Night Solar - A touched-by-Mara sorceress and Black Claw stylist

  • TDS, in the role of Warden of the Onyx Eye - Zenith Solar - The last survivor of a monastic order dedicated to guarding a cursed demon blade

  • TheFarReach, in the role of Scales Glisten under Storm-tossed Waves - No Moon Lunar - A western necromancer and reptilian shapeshifter

Because the vast majority of players wanted to use discord, I have made a discord server and am in the process of inviting the chosen players to it.  Once the game begins, will be periodically posting the narrative of the game in a new thread, along with a link to the discord server so that anybody who wants to observe can follow along.
